I love thinking inside the box, so this creativity centered photo excursion pushed me a little bit! I had a lot of fun experimenting with unique angles and perspectives, and I loved editing these photos in post. I learned a lot, and by the end I had a whole list of areas where I can improve next time.
levitation
This was a lot of fun to capture, especially due to the intense winds! I needed to weigh down the tripod and have a friend hold down the stool so it wouldn’t get blown over. I adjusted the brightness and highlights in Photoshop – and pulled off a little levitation magic.
light painting
This photo came about at the end of the excursion upon coming home. Instead of doing something big and complex, I gathered up a few Christmas decorations and an antique bible and focused on how I could gently paint it with light. I used a 20 second shutter speed and adjusted the hue in post.
abstract
I got this great photo of a grain silo by laying on the ground and looking straight up. Then I got some great shots of the cracked ground below it and decided to overlay the ground over the sky, which gives it an almost dizzying effect and makes you wonder if you’re looking straight up or down.
commercial
A mandatory part of any day trip is a stop for ice cream, and what better place than Baskin Robbins! I sharpened and brightened the image in post which helped bring out the logo. I also removed the tree on the right side in order to draw the eye immediately to the ice cream.
conceptual
This year has been a complex one, and my goal with this photo was to capture the current reality of the situation. The model is looking back longingly, but with a solemnity and determination to face life head-on. I used the dodge and burn tools in Photoshop to adjust the highlights and shadows, and used the spot removal tool to erase the pattern on the mask.
