This was such a fun project to work on! I love photos which play with depth, and I’m really happy with the photos I was able to capture. I continued having some camera issues, but shooting in broad daylight helped minimize the red hue of my camera, and Lightroom helped the rest of the way.

shallow depth

Fuzzy bee; 10-3-2020; 5pm; Rexburg Temple; 55mm; F/5.6; 1/125; Canon T3i

The bees were out pollinating these purple flowers, and I wanted to see if I could capture a close-up shot of them. I used a wide aperture and fast shutter speed then zoomed the lens in order to get this super up-close shot. I brightened the photo and adjusted the reds in the photo using Lightroom.

Autumn leaf; 10-3-2020; 5:15pm; Rexburg Temple; 32mm; F/4.5; 1/160; Canon T3i

I wanted this shot to have a greater distance between the foreground and the background than the previous shot, and I feel like I was able to capture that depth really well by using a larger aperture and faster shutter speed.

deep depth

Wheat; 10-3-2020; 5:10pm; Rexburg Temple; 18mm; F/22; 1/40; Canon T3i

Learning how to take a photo showing deep depth took a little more trial and error, but I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish. I wanted to get an interesting shot of the temple (since it’s been photographed … a lot) and decided to position myself so the wheat was on the foreground. I narrowed the aperture to f/22 and played with different angles and positions until I was able to accomplish this shot. I brightened, recolored, and fixed the alignment in Lightroom.

Pond; 10-6-2020; 3:30pm; Rexburg Nature Park; 26mm; F/18; 1/80; Canon T3i – Tripod

I’m still searching out good photo spots in Rexburg, but I was able to explore Nature Park and found some gorgeous spots that I might return to. The water was beautiful and the lighting was great. I set up my tripod and tried a bunch of settings. I played with a slow shutter speed – but for the final shot I stuck with a faster shutter speed with a narrow aperture. I made sure to keep the grass in the foreground in focus, and with a narrow aperture the background stayed in focus. I adjusted the brightness and removed some people from the background in Lightroom.

I loved taking these photographs – and the hundreds more I took along the way – but I know I’ve got room to improve. Any advice?
